Praying for Ukraine: Righteousness

The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. (Proverbs 11:5)

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. (Proverbs 14:34)

Scripture repeatedly shows that righteous, honourable conduct is approved by God and brings good outcomes, for both individuals and nations.

Sadly, Ukraine has had a poor international reputation for corruption, largely inherited from the former USSR. The global Corruption Perceptions Index shows Ukraine varying between 126th and 116th in the world from 2018 to 2022. (Russia is worse, between 129th and 138th).

Ukraine has been facing up to these corruption challenges. President Zelenskyy was elected with promises of reducing corruption but the reputation has continued. During the war Zelenskyy has carried out various anti-corruption purges, which included firing both leading officials and presidential aides, though in the ongoing conflict it is difficult to see how effective these actions have been. Because of American concerns, particularly over rumours of aid being used to buy luxury yachts, Zelenskyy found it necessary to defend Ukraine’s work on overcoming corruption to the US Congress. The levels of corruption have been a serious concern to those planning to finance Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction. Most recently, Ukraine’s security services claim to have found large-scale corruption in an arms purchase.

To pray for Ukraine we do not need to understand the extent of the problem, or the progress in overcoming it. Our friends there may well understand specific local problems, but even without this detailed knowledge we can pray:

  1. For the leaders to have wisdom, integrity and diligence in dealing with corruption.
  2. For repentance, and for a stronger value of integrity to develop within the nation.
  3. For new effective systems against corruption to be developed.
  4. For Christians to shine as lights of the world and to be effective salt of the earth.
  5. For God to raise up Christians to play leading roles in society, with faith and integrity.
  6. For Ukraine to lose its reputation as a corrupt nation, so that aid is not hindered and reconstruction can go ahead effectively after the war.

Righteousness exalts a nation. As there is a turning from wickedness and corruption, may God work on their behalf in the unjust war they are now facing.
